"I’ve never really stood in front of a crowd and talked to them about ‘the gay'... but I’ve got nothing to hide."

Said Fox News anchor Shepard Smith, talking to students at the University of Mississippi’s Meek School of Journalism.
Smith grew up in Holly Springs, Miss., a town of less than 8,000 people.... Partially due to this upbringing, Smith said, he didn’t consider his sexuality for most of his life. Hoping to avoid confronting his confusing feelings, he threw himself into work....

“I needed to sort of escape what my reality might have been, because I wasn’t answering my own questions or even posing my own questions to myself,” he said. “I put it in a box.... I think part of that was this other thing that I had going on. I didn’t want to ask myself that question or figure that out or learn how to deal with that.... Because to me it was antithetical to all that was okay.... A. You’re going to hell for it. B. You’ll never have any friends again. C. What are you going to tell your family? And by the way, you’re on television on the craziest conservative network on Earth. They will probably put you in front of a brick wall and mow you down. Of course, none of that was true, but that’s how it felt.... One day I found the box. Then I cried for a long time.... "

Why are you viewing this through the prism of his sexuality?

He does well at Fox because as far as I can tell, he's an overachieving workaholic who produces good results.

At some point, he'll probably learn that the only important people who care about his private life are only those with whom he interacts privately. All the others? Totally ignorable -- and they probably don't even really care about him!

AlbertAnonymous said...

M Jordan,

I was thinking the same thing (at least from a catholic perspective) that so many people get the theology wrong and think (or claim) that you go to hell if you're gay. Not true. Its the actions that would or would not be sinful. And there's always repentance for sinful actions.

But as I read deeper into the article, he talks about doing his work and going home to the man he loves. So maybe he is committing sinful acts (if he even believes any more). But then again maybe not. There are catholic gays who live with their partners but are celibate. Shep can live with the man he loves without sinning.

But again, I don't care if he's gay, sees it as sinful or whatever else. Free country still. Thank God!

The exaggeration (and sometimes complete fabrication) of bigotry creates anxiety in the vulnerable. The "rape culture" exaggeration is the best present example. Whether this anxiety is an unintended consequence or a express goal of the Justice Warriors is an open question. Probably depends on the Warrior, but the effect is the same regardless of intent.

She Smith's sexual orientation has been an open secret for years, but I can appreciate the understated way that Smith referenced it in his speech. I much prefer that to an opportunist like Anderson Cooper, who spent the entire time his star was rising refusing to talk about his sexuality and saying that it had no pertinence to his job, making a public showing of coming out in the form of en email to Andrew Sullivan (just as his daytime talk show ratings were circling the drain) and now carries himself as Mr. Gay Pride. I will never forget Cooper's interview with Florida AG Pam Bondi in the aftermath of the Pulse nightclub massacre. I am no fan of Pam Bondi's, but she was expressing normal human empathy in the face of an obvious tragedy, and Anderson thought it would be a good time to grill her on her same-sex marriage stance. Apparently for a trust-fund nitwit like Anderson Cooper, he cannot grasp that someone can have a political opposition to same-sex marriage and still be horrified at the mass slaughter of innocents. I never wanted to crawl through the TV and put my fist through the back of someone's smug face as badly as I did during that incident.

Hmm....I seem to have gone a little far afield.

But you are preprogrammed to see "hate" from conservatives and it looks that anything that isn't cooing, asskissing "Ooooooh, isn't he brave!" counts as "hate" in your mind.

Now you can trot on over to some left-wing site and tell them about how you bravely stood up those ha8ers and celebrated LIFE, man!

J. Farmer is correct - Everyone who pays attention to any news or gossip re: Fox News has known for years about Smith. He's more melodramatic than what I like in "disaster" situations, but I admire the fact that he never, ever assumed the mantle of Victim, unlike Anderson Cooper. He wanted to succeed based on his talent and hard work and never made himself part of the story. Good for him for going back home (Mississippi) and not bringing a bevy of PR flaks and TV cameras along with him.

The individual is judged by the "content of his character", not his diversity class.

Even expression of his transgender orientation, say as a couplet, since it's not a progressive condition, is not a proximate concern for society. Although, reducing women to womb banks and men to sperm depositors so that Heather can have two daddies or two mommies, respectively, cannot be considered positive progress.

As a journalist, just the facts, Smith.

That said, in light of the liberal baby hunts, his second outing is unlikely to be a coincidence.
